Director, BDC Portfolio Mgmt – NYC (Internal job code 33021)
Working closely with existing team members, the Director of Portfolio Management will be responsible for all aspects of portfolio management within Alcentra Capital Corporation, a publicly traded business development corporation. He/she should bring the analytical, investing, communications and strategic skills needed to make an immediate and valuable contribution to the organization. This person must be able to work with people senior and junior to them in terms of responsibility and foster a team environment. Specific responsibilities include: Establish a monthly reporting system for portfolio companies to report their financial results in a manner that is consistent with the portfolio company s loan documents. This reporting system should also reflect appropriate controls and procedures that ensure an audit trail and integrity for BDC audit standards. Establish a monthly/quarterly management review process and series of meetings to discuss the financial performance of the underlying portfolio companies; that holds the deal origination people accountable for discussing the results. Assess and inform senior BDC management of performance issues that may result in covenant breaches or defaults. Develop an action plan for such circumstances when defaults occur to minimize losses. Establish an internal portfolio rating system to assess the credit quality of individual portfolio companies at date of origination and on an on-going basis. Work closely with the BDC CEO and CFO and third party valuation service providers to provide appropriate valuation data and reports for purposes of valuing the investment portfolio on a quarterly basis. Perform industry and company due diligence Oversight and accountability for financial analysis, valuation and modeling. Assist in deal and credit negotiations. Meet with portfolio company management teams on a quarterly basis to understand the performance of the company and the strategic initiatives therein. Clearly communicate with operating company management teams and other members of the internal team. Mentor junior staff members. Candidate Profile: The Director of BDC Portfolio Management will be a thoughtful, high-energy individual who has experience as a portfolio manager or credit manager in the leverage finance industry dealing with middle market companies and private equity firms. The person must be a team player who believes in accountability, is approachable, has a strong sense of urgency, and is results oriented. This should include: More than seven years of private equity, mezzanine or senior leveraged lending experience. Demonstrated ability to manage a portfolio of junior capital and equity investments through a variety of economic cycles with strong credit performance metrics. Demonstrated ability to negotiate complex loan documents, including senior and subordinated debt and equity. Experience working through difficult credits ( work-outs ) with minimal losses. Broad, diversified industry experience is preferred (healthcare, information and business services, government services are examples).
Strong communications skills including an ability to make presentations to senior executives and clearly articulate oneself in both written and oral forms. BA / BS required. MBA and/or CFA preferred. Willingness to travel extensively. Seven+ years of private equity, mezzanine or senior leveraged lending experience.
